About

The Gippsland Offshore Wind Alliance is an industry-led alliance, delivered by the Committee for Gippsland and the Gippsland Climate Change Network, providing a united focus on securing investment, developing a skilled workforce and building the infrastructure critical to Gippsland’s offshore wind sector.

Gippsland is unique. As Australia’s most investment-ready offshore wind region, Gippsland offers unmatched wind resources in shallow, near-shore waters, access to a high-capacity transmission network into the Latrobe Valley, and a workforce with decades of powergeneration expertise.

As coal retires, Gippsland can directly redeploy existing skills and supply chains to offshore wind, preserving energy security and regional employment. These fundamentals have seen broad community support for Gippsland to anchor the nation’s offshore wind industry.

The Gippsland Offshore Wind Alliance (the Alliance) was established to strategically deliver an offshore wind industry for the Gippsland region that proactively engages with local communities, industry and supply chains to build awareness and understanding, and create a positive legacy for the region.

Gippsland can be the exemplar to other regions undergoing transition across Australia but we can only do this through a collaborative approach – government (of all levels), industry and community working together. Through embracing innovation, increasing employment participation and understanding community priorities, the Alliance seeks to empower the region to play a leading role in the energy transition.

Gippsland Offshore Wind Sector Plan

The Gippsland Offshore Wind Sector Plan outlines how Gippsland can lead Australia’s offshore wind industry in a way that is coordinated, provides confidence, and delivers real commitment to local industry and communities.

With feasibility licence holders for the declared Gippsland offshore wind zone confirmed, now is the time to come together to unlock ongoing investment, develop a skilled workforce and build the infrastructure to underpin the local offshore wind sector and secure Gippsland’s clean energy future. The Sector Plan outlines a path to do just that. The plan contains five key focus areas which are vital to support the successful implementation of offshore wind in the Gippsland region:

  1. Maximising economic, energy and climate benefits

  2. Enabling infrastructure

  3. Workforce education and upskilling

  4. Supply chain and manufacturing capabilities

  5. Engaging communities

Each focus area includes a series of key recommendations for governments, industry and local communities to work together on to ensure the benefits of offshore wind can be realised. The plan is a key part of the conversation we have already started with governments and local communities. We want to keep that conversation going — accompanied by action — and are committed to working collaboratively with governments and communities to deliver offshore wind in Gippsland in a way that acknowledges the region’s energy history, cultural connection to Country and paves the way for a strong, sustainable future.
